“Some races are not about being perfect. They are about choosing to stand on the start line even when your body and mind are not at their best.”

TRIGON-supported athlete Cindy recently completed her first Olympic-distance triathlon of the season in Malaysia, finishing second in her age group (P2) while recording the fastest women's swim and fastest women's bike split of the race.

To many, it was a successful result.

For Cindy, however, the true value of the race was gaining a clearer understanding of where she currently stands.

When Nothing Goes According to Plan

Preparation for the race was far from ideal.

She accidentally left her swim buoy at the Airbnb and had to make multiple trips into the transition area after repeatedly forgetting equipment. Her shoulder was still bothering her following her previous race in Sanya, and she intentionally held back during the swim.

Toward the end of the swim, an unexpected cramp developed in her left quadriceps and continued throughout both the bike and run segments.

“Honestly, I wasn’t feeling great before the race. My mind was all over the place.”

But that is often the reality of competition.

The most meaningful races do not always happen on your strongest day. Sometimes they happen when conditions are far from perfect, and you still find a way to keep moving forward.

Just like Cindy’s performance in this race: even when conditions were not ideal, she trusted herself and continued forward.

The Next Race Begins Now

Although she finished second in her category, Cindy is already looking ahead.

For her, the greatest takeaway from this race was understanding her current fitness and identifying what still needs improvement.

In just 30 days, she will line up again at the World Triathlon Development Cup Kampar.

For an athlete, every race is a benchmark.

And every benchmark is another step closer to becoming the rider—and person—they aspire to be.
